The Imperial Hotel Torquay
We really enjoyed our visit to Cornwall last year so we decided to return this year via Devon. My wife had been to Paignton on holiday a few times and I had been there once but that was over 40 year’s ago. Neither of us had been to Torquay, but we decided to start our holiday in Torquay mainly because of our love of Fawlty Towers. After we booked we found out that, although Fawlty Towers is set in Torquay, it was actually filmed at Wooburn Grange Country Club in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. It caught fire in 1991 and has since been demolished.
We booked into the Imperial Hotel in Torquay for three nights. It is located on the outskirts of Torquay up a steep hill.
Although not very impressive on the outside, the interior of the Imperial Hotel still contains the grandeur from a bygone age.
The room contained everything you would expect like a television, a kettle, tea, coffee, shampoo. It also included things I had not expected like an ironing board and iron, a dressing gown and slippers. The room did contain a fridge but it was locked.
The shower was in the bath and there was always plenty of hot water. The shower was powerful.
Breakfast was included in the price. It was the usual all you can eat buffet breakfast with cereal, fruit, yoghurt, as well as a cooked breakfast. There was plenty of choice.
The same could not be said for the evening meal. It had a very limited expensive menu but the food was excellent.
The staff were very good and attentive, but did seem to be in short supply at breakfast time. If you were to arrive for breakfast after 8 am then there would be a queue despite there being plenty of empty tables.
My only real criticism of the hotel is that there is a charge for the car park. I knew before hand that there would be a charge as it is clear on the website but it is quite unnecessary as it is on their own land.
