I am in the middle of my 11 day stay at the Troulos Bay Hotel on the Greek island of Skiathos. So how is it going so far? Great apart from the weather. The weather has been mixed. Cold on the first day. Sunbed weather for a few days. Now it is cold and raining with thunder forecast. Note to self - don’t come back at the beginning of May.
Troulos Bay Hotel

The Troulos Bay Hotel is a small hotel that is two steps down to the beach. Perfect. I like small hotels. You get to know other guests. It has been great getting to know three couples from other parts of the country. It was also something to do on the days when the weather has not been so good. Being right on the beach is also my idea of a perfect holiday. From my sunbed to the sea is about 50 yards.
The hotel has three floors but there is no lift. The staircases are all external which probably isn’t a problem most of the year.
The choice of rooms are:
Double Room with Garden View sleeping upto 2;
Double Room with Sea View sleeping upto 4;
Twin Room with Sea View sleeping upto 3; and
Twin Room with Limited Sea View sleeping upto 3.
Each room comes with a mini-fridge, television, hairdryer, and a safety deposit box. In some hotels I have had to pay for the safety deposit box but at Troulos Bay it is included in the price. Air-conditioning is also available from mid-June to mid-September but there is an additional charge for this. As we stayed at the beginning of May this was not available or needed so I do not know how much the additional charge is.

We paid extra for the Double Room with Sea View. We have room 309 on the top floor.
The room is great but there are four rooms of this type and each room has the sea view partially obscured by the dining room roof.

You can still see the sea but the view is spoiled. Rooms 311 and 313 must have more of an obscured view. If we come back we will go for a Twin Room with Sea View.
The room is cleaned daily and bedding and towels are changed a couple of times a week. The bed is comfortable. The shower is not the strongest that I have experienced but it is adequate and it is always hot.
Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel but some areas are better than others.
An area by the bar is full, possibly over full, with wicker furniture. The cushions could do with updating but they are still comfortable.
The staff are excellent.
Not only is the safe free but the pool towels are free as well. The last time that I was in Greece - Zante both the safe and the pool towels cost €3 a day.
There is a supermarket about 100 yards away.
Meals
We took the bed and breakfast option because we like Greek food and some hotels, particularly all inclusive hotels, serve international cuisine. We could have had the half board option here because all of the meals are Greek. The breakfasts are a bit limited. There is usually cornflakes or muesli, tinned fruit (usually pear and peaches), Greek yoghurt, bread, cakes, eggs, and bacon. The breakfasts are serve yourself but lunch and evening meals are off the menu with waiters bringing the meal to you. Although our intention had been to eat out for lunch and evening meals we have eaten at the hotel quite often. Although the menu is more limited than near by tavernas, prices are comparable and the quality of food is good. Wherever we have eaten, the food has always been excellent.
Another place where the food is particularly good is “Paralia”. It is on the beach next door to the hotel. We often went there for lunch. I particularly liked the Gyros Chicken in pitta bread and the cheese pie. The cheese pie is nothing like cheese pie in England. It is feta cheese in filo pastry deep fried. My wife calls it a heart attack on a plate but I call it delicious. For a more special meal, the Victoria Taverna, about 500 yards away, is well worth a visit.
Pool Area

The pool area is immaculately kept. The pool is a bit on the small side but, with the sea only a few yards away, it is adequate. Around the pool is 28 sunbeds. This is adequate at the moment but at busy times you may have to use beds on the beach. At €12 per day for two beds it will significantly add to the cost of the holiday. In Zante last year the charge was only €6.
The pool bar is not open but it looks like they are getting ready to open it soon.
Gardens
The garden area is quite small but very well maintained.
Entertainment
There is none, which is a blessing. I find that it is rare that entertainment in hotels is bearable. We also haven the had to endure somebody else choice in music blaring out by the pool. Fantastic. Very relaxing.
Skiathos
The tourist areas of Skiathos are on the south of the island with a very good bus service connecting the resorts and beaches. The busses operate every 30 minutes from 7.00 am to 11.00 pm every day from May to September. Bus stop 20 is about 100 yards from the hotel. To Skiathos Town at one end of the route costs €3 while Koukanaries beach at the other end of the route costs €2. Car hire is available locally but the bus service is so good and cheap that we didn’t bother. Koukanaries beach is a very nice sandy beach but there is nothing else there. As there are other very nice beaches I don’t think that we will be going back. Skiathos Town is well worth a visit. We have been there twice so far.
Summary
We will definitely be back but just not at the beginning of May.
