Amazon Fire Tablet review

The Amazon Fire Tablet comes in three different sizes, the 7 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch. I have the 8 inch version.

Amazon Fire Tablet HD8

I purchased a Fire HD8 to replace my iPad. My iPad had not been updating the operating system for some time and therefore also not updating the apps. Is the HD8 as good as an iPad? It is slower, though not significantly so, but it is about £300 cheaper. It would be well worth it at the the full price if £100 but I bought mine half price in the Black Friday sale so was even greater value.

Fire Tablets can do everything that other Tablets can do. They use the Android mobile operating system but it is slightly amended to better accommodate Amazon’s Prime Video, Fire for Kids Unlimited, and Kindle ebooks. If you use any or all of these services then a Fire Tablet is probably a better option for you.

Like all tablets, on the Fire Tablet you can enjoy millions of movies, TV programmes, songs, Kindle eBooks, apps and games including Netflix, Facebook, Spotify and more.

Each of the Fire Tablets can be bought with or without Advertisements. Advertisements can be for anything but are usually for something that Amazon sells. They appear on the screen saver which goes away once you swipe up to unlock your tablet. Buying with Advertisements is usually about £10 cheaper than buying without them. You basically have the opportunity to pay about £10 not to see the adverts. Paying the £10 l, however, does not stop adverts within apps.

The Fire HD 8 has an 8” High Definition display, and either 32 or 64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 1TB of expandable storage with a microSD card (sold separately).

I bought the 32GB version and a 128GB SanDisk micro SD card. I use the tablet every day for emails, the news, and games. The expandable memory comes into its own when I go on holiday. For me it is the expandable memory the means that I will not go back to iPad.

I like to watch movies particularly when I fly to holidays. On my iPad this was not really possible because it does not have expandable memory. I could delete some apps to make space for one movie. I have download movies on to the Fire's expandable memory. The 10 hour battery life is enough even if there is a long plane delay. Downloading songs to the expandable memory means that I can listen to music all day on my sunbed. The expandable memory means that I do not have to make a choice of what goes on my tablet.

For each of the Fire’s there is also a Kids Edition

Kids Fire

The Kids Editions are not a toy, they have all of the features of the non-kids versions but they are Kid proof. Each contain a kid-proof case with kick-stand and parental controls.

Kids Editions also contain:

  • A 2-year worry-free guarantee. If it breaks, return it and will be replaced.

  • 1-year subscription to Fire for Kids Unlimited (Only available to customers located in the UK) giving kids access to thousands of popular apps, games, videos, books and Audible audiobooks, including content from Disney, Nickelodeon and Sesame Street.

With Kids Editions you can:

  • Set time limits and educational goals remotely from your smartphone using Amazon parent Dashboard, or the Kids Edition tablet.

  • Download content to watch and play on the go.

I have been very impressed with my Fire HD 8 tablet. Price wise and memory wise, I definitely prefer the Fire tablet.
